"Um, excuse me." Demeter frowned. "Are you even paying attention to what I'm saying?" She followed his gaze to the crowd of squirrels that had assembled behind her. "Look at those faces. They have families, just like we do. They have to work hard to get food to their families, and they have to find a good home, too. Don't take their problems lightly. Put yourself in their place."

"Most people do have their problems," Jerry pointed out, mainly to try and get her to talk more, it seemed a little bit too wishy washy and idealistic but the little tree-hugger had a way with words "Getting food to their families, getting somewhere to hide, etcetera etcetera,"
Jerry coughed a little and looked at the squirrels. He sighed, tore half of his sandwich off and placed it on the floor in front of them. "I cannot believe I just did that," He muttered "Anyway, you were saying?"

Demeter smiled triumphantly as some of the squirrels hurried forward, retrieving the sandwich, and taking it back to the crowd, who hurriedly devoured it. "Yes, but the people with those problems can be helped, or they deserve those circumstances. You never see a squirrel kill another squirrel for drugs or money, do you? No, you don't." Demeter sat down so that the squirrels could climb all over her, and she stroked each one lovingly. "They are very gentle creatures who deserve love and respect. If this city would create a code of conduct when it came to the wildlife, these precious animals would be able to live much more safely and freely."

"You aren't the first person to suggest that though," Jerry said, chuckling a little "Liberals, hippies and eco-terrorists have all been coming forward with ideas on how to give people like ... Toby -" Jerry began to hope no one was watching him namely because he had just called a squirrel by name "- better living conditions, but none of them have been sustainable,"
He paused and then looked at Toby again, he shifted his gaze to the dictaphone and then sighed. "Why the Hell not," he sighed placing the dictaphone in front of Toby "Toby, how do you feel about this situation?"

Demeter smiled. Finally, someone seemed to be taking this problem seriously! Toby chattered eagerly, the other squirrels nodding in agreement. "He says that it is hard for him and his fellows to lead safe, normal lives because they have to be careful of the humans and machines in the city. He also says that if one of them dares to venture out of the park, because the park gets to populated, that they are at an even greater risk! Why should he have to hide and be accomidating to the humans when his people were here first?" Demeter patted Toby on the head, and he chattered more. "He also says that it wouls be nice if the people in the park would ask permission before assuming that they can throw their trash everywhere."

"Ask permission?" Jerry wondered "You mean you're okay if they leave litter everywhere as long as they ask you first?" Jerry started the question at Demeter but gradually moved over to Toby as he spoke.
"Why's that then?"
It was curious, Jerry expected the squirrels to want their home to be all nice and pristine.

Demeter rolled her eyes as the squirrels all started chattering at once. Toby turned to them and they quieted down. "Of course not. That's ridiculous." Demeter said, rolling her eyes again. "They want people to throw their trash away and recycle and all that. But certain things can make very good bedding for their nests. Like napkins. Instead of someone throwing unused napkins on the ground, they could ask if any of the squirrels needed it. The squirrels want to be asked if the people can use the territory. And if people want to ruin it by littering, then they shouldn't be allowed to use it." The squirrels nodded in agreement.

"There's one problem I think you've overlooked," Jerry told both the Squirrels and the Squirrel ... Girl "And that's that the majority of the human population don't speak Squirrel-ish," He looked up at Toby "That's not offensive is it? Have I insulted you?"
"I mean, I'm only able to have this conversation with Toby and his friends because you are able to talk to squirrels and are translating for me," He hadn't noticed that his dictaphone had stopped recording, he was actually genuinely interested now. "I think you'll agree, that throws a spanner in the works,"

Demeter smirked. She had been waiting for this moment. "How many people do you think speak dog or cat?" The squirrels nodded in agreement. "Yet, people still talk to them, and watch their reactions. If you even just make yourself aware that the squirrels have rightful ownership of this area, and treat them the proper way, then everything will be fine. After all, mankind is the ultimate pest." The squirrels nodded and Toby chattered in satisfaction.

Jerry looked a bit uneasy, he was surrounded by a large army of squirrels at this point. He swallowed nervously and tried to think of another question. After three seconds of stammering he eventually asked Demeter and the squirrels a question:
"So ... is there a-anything you like about humans?" He asked.
