Physical Description: Ian is a tall man in his 80's with a slim but muscular physique. He usually dresses formally (shirt and tie) and has a fondness for fingerless gloves and trenchcoats and often wears a brown fedora with a rose placed into the band.
His Thunderer costume (that he still keeps in a box) was made of black spandex with red boots, gloves and a utility belt that held a few coils of super-strong wire and a pistol. The suit also had a red hooded cloak that went over a black mask, with a pair of small white slits for eyes.
Personality: Jerry used to be a dark, angsty and brooding individual who took his frustrations and fears out on criminals with a pistol and his powers. And then he met Annie, who changed his outlook on everything, she was happy, bubbly and bright. Almost immediately he stopped killing criminals and just left them outside the police station.
He's mellowed out a lot more recently. He's chatty, informal and takes everything in a really relaxed manner. He likes imparting wisdom to the "rookies" even though he will admit (though not in public) most of his advice is terrible and it just makes him feel important.
Powers: Jerry only has one power: He can alter the sound level of his voice at will. He is capable of speaking in an ultrasonic pitch that only dogs can hear or screaming loud enough to shatter glass and burst eardrums. He's even capable of creating an ultra-low frequency drone that causes stress fractures in solid objects. Jerry isn't vulnerable to his own powers so isn't deafened or hurt when he uses his voice, he can also hear his voice if he goes ultrasonic.
The Thunderer is a superb marksman and acrobat with the skills to take out men twice his size, he may have gotten a bit clumsier and slightly weaker in the past 60 years but he's still a formidable threat to someone who wants to try their luck.
Weaknesses: Other than an allergy to peanuts, he's also getting up in the years, he can still really on his powers and physical strength to get out of a jam but he's fallen out of practice and gotten a bit more frail so you can't expect him to save the day.
History: Jerry Carstairs was born as Jerry Gale in the year 1926 to a pair of abusive drunken parents. So when he was 12 years old he ran away from home but unfortunately with nowhere to go he wound up living on the street. After a couple of years his life took a turn for the better.
Jerry was walking past the headquarters of a newspaper company when a pair of burglars ran out carrying several bags of cash. Jerry was pushed over by one of them and grabbed hold of his coat to break his fall so the man tried to push him off. By the time a pair of security guards ran out Jerry had subdued one of them (even though the other one had gotten away).
One of the security guards was impressed and took pity on Jerry and as he and his wife were struggling to conceive decided to adopt him. Jerry found it a welcome change to the last fourteen years of his life and took their last name of Carstairs. When Jerry had graduated school, proving to be a very intelligent student despite missing so much school but sadly couldn't get the grades needed for a job. Luckily his adoptive father (Simon Carstairs) suggested Jerry could work in the printing rooms which he did.
Jerry thought about trying his hand at writing articles and so decided to write one about what it was like working at the Daily Bugle, when he showed it to the editor he was actually fairly amazed when he said it was a good article and decided to publish it. Over the years Jerry wrote a couple more articles and eventually got his own column when he was in his early 20's.
His column was basically the musings of a "fairly unusual gentleman" but was kind of popular. One of the first articles he wrote about for his column was on a new type of sonic weapon. He was at the demonstration when it malfunctioned and fired at Jerry. The odd thing was he seemed fine apart from a sore throat.
A few weeks later, doctors having come to the conclusion that Jerry was miraculously unaffected, he was mugged on the way home and shouted for help accidentally deafening his attackers. Jerry tried it again and discovered that he could create ultra-powerful screams and shouts. The result of it must have been the sonic weapon.
Jerry thought that a good use for his powers would be fighting criminals and took to the alleyways killing off rapists and murderers in a. However all the murders took a massive toll on his psyche and he became more violent and unstable criminals started getting scared to go outside. Then one day, resting in a diner after a fight with a couple of child pornographers he met a girl called Annie, the two hit it off almost instantly and went out on a date.
Annie started to stabilize the Thunderers actions and he stopped killing, instead dumping his victims outside the police station. The Thunderers adventures came to an end when Jerry decided to stop dragging his feet and proposed to Annie. Unfortunately Annie and their children (Carlton and Mike) as well as Jerry and Annie's families have died leaving him all alone.
Jerry's started considering the Thunderer again, with all the new superheroes and villains running about, should he help them? should he reveal his identity? Should he just let it be? Only time will tell ...
Sample Post: Jerry looked at the article he'd just written, it was good but something was bugging him. He looked closely at the screen, was it a spelling mistake? He clicked "Spelling and Grammar" on his laptop. Nope, everything was fine.
He sat back in his chair, what was it? The article was about Spiderman and what had happened in the relatively short time he'd been active. Then it detailed all the information about the other vigilantes, Punisher, Venom, Daredevil etc. Jerry felt there was something missing so he skimmed down it again. What was it?
Jerry sighed and saved it, he had a couple of hours till the deadline. Maybe if he got some lunch it would come to him.
